This involves clever utilization of space in this busy dealership where everything from new and used car sales and service operations are carried out in a single location.

To this end, the original design utilized 17,700ft2 of the rooftop above the service areas for vehicle parking and storage which can accommodate up to 40 cars if required, allowing this otherwise dead space to become a useful, safe storage area, that is only accessible by a vehicle elevator from the service area below.

Renovations and extensions to the dealership were completed in April 2009, since which time the rooftop waterproofing had severely deteriorated, due to concerns with water penetration into the underlying structure, the team from Oakville Autohaus contacted Automotive Sector Specialists, Northway Construction to review the site.

Stonhard's team was invited to evaluate the condition of the rooftop waterproofing by Northway Construction, based on mutual past experience on various projects throughout the Greater Toronto Area. A detailed inspection of the structure confirmed extensive cracking throughout the rooftop combined with waterproofing that had, in places, worn through to the underlying concrete.

Given the critical importance of protecting the building from the ingress of water and de-icing salts, combined with the exposed nature of the site, Stonhard proposed Stondeck FD4 as the optimal solution for the restoration of the rooftop. This system was also supplemented with crack treatment to further enhance the waterproofing systems ability to protect the underlying structure.

The Team from Mercedes Benz Oakville cleared the vehicles from the roof in early October allowing Stonhard to install the new rooftop waterproofing system. Given the size of the area, Stonhard mobilized a 7-man installation crew to install the system as quickly as possible, due to the limited weather window for installation this late in the construction season.

Once all the preparation work was completed, Stonhard quickly installed the base waterproofing membrane layer to ensure that the structure was once again watertight.

The membrane was quickly followed by a heavy-duty anti-slip system, which helps to provide both wear protection for the underlying membrane and anti-slip properties of the final surface.

Any excess aggregate was removed from the wear course before it was sealed with a UV-stable topcoat to lock in the surface texture and help ensure the system's long-term colour stability and durability.

Despite the challenging nature of working on exterior projects late in the construction season, the combination of Stonhard’s in-house prep team and installation crews quickly and seamlessly installed the project in less than a week from start to finish ensuring that the people, building and vehicles below would be protected from the ravages of Canadian winter.
